Amber Lewis // Phoenix, AZ

A Sikh, Jew, and ballerina walk into a barre on Sunday… there’s a line somewhere in there, and I don’t even mean it to be.

Early this Sunday morning, Amber and I were traversing around downtown Tempe, and we stumbled across this alley way behind a Sikh gurdwara (temple) and a Jewish synagogue. While the Jewish synagogue was empty, there were a few people already lining up to enter the gurdwara.

And then here comes Amber, dressed normally for a ballerina, but perhaps not the ideal attire for a visitor to the Sikh temple. Without making a scene, we found this area with cool shadows (opposite of a unique garage door with the coolest lines and lighting), and I asked her to place her leg up on the wall, following the line of the shadow on the wall. Within a few minutes, a gentleman came over, asking what we were doing, and why Amber was revealing so much leg. Although we tried to explain what we were doing, he didn’t seem to want to have much of it.

Not wanting to cause a scene, we told the gentleman that we would be leaving soon, but not before finishing our session, capturing a few other shadowy frames.
