Anais Bueno // Chicago, IL

Samson is wrestling a lion, and Anais is just chilling on pointe in the Art Institute of Chicago. I was quite surprised that I was allowed to  enter the museum and photograph professionally, ‘as long as I didn’t cause any sort of disturbance’. I happily paid the entrance fee and, Anais and I got to making these images.

As the majority of my shoots go, either the ballerina or I are always in a rush, and as one knows, you can’t rush art. But I rush art all the time, not just making it, but in this instance also admiring it. With about 45 minutes, Anais and I made our way through the main hall, looking for corners to pose in without causing much of a disturbance - and without breaking any art.

I asked Anais to place her pointed pointe shoe in the middle of the tiled line, and imagine that Samson was protecting her from the deadly lion - although in the instance of the photo shoot, I actually thought this was King David, and I thought it more appropriate as such.

Fun fact: a version of this image made it into Vogue.
